About Child Welfare Services
 |
Child Welfare Services work to promote family strengths to ensure that the health, safety and well-being of Anishinabek children are upheld and protected. With a focus on prevention, early intervention and protection in partnership with individuals, families and communities, children are cared for with respect of their cultural background and overall quality of life.

Dilico is mandated as a children's aid society under the provincial Child and Family Services Act.
Intake Service
As the first point of contact, Intake Service uses professional tools to assess the eligibility to receive services for a child or family. Intake Service investigates allegations of child abuse and neglect, to determine the best possible care for a child.
Family Service
When long-term protection concerns have been identified, Family Service works collaboratively with the children and families to ensure the safety of children. Dilico does its utmost to help keep families together and to reunite families by providing intervention, advocacy, support and guidance.
Alternative Care Service
A network of home resources in Thunder Bay and throughout the District provide foster and treatment foster care. Foster homes provide a nurturing and supportive environment for children in need of alternative care outside of their family. Treatment foster homes provide a more structured and therapeutic environment for children experiencing significant difficulties in their lives.
Become an Alternative Care Provider
When a child has been placed in the care of Dilico, families in Thunder Bay and the district provide temporary homes for the child until they return to their family, or a permanent plan is made. Children are of varying needs and ages. Dilico provides ongoing support services for alternative care families.
Permanent Care Service
Permanent Care Service provides support, direction and permanency planning to Crown Wards, children who are wards of the Crown and parented by Dilico as determined by the Courts. The staff assists and guides these children towards an independent and healthy lifestyle. Adoption services are also provided, and include consent, disclosure, home studies, placement and support.
